towers in the park

ARCH 401 - Judith Kinnard - Cambridge, Massachusetts

This housing development, on the Charles River and neighbored by Peabody Terrace, mediates the scale between the larger institutional complexes of Harvard and the smaller community scale of Cambridge. The goal of the project, with three towers and two bars of rowhouses was to provide high-quality residences with bountiful access to the outdoors. This is achieved through the protruding balconies on both sides of the towers as well as large community spaces which puncture the three towers to break up the mass. Furthermore, the low-rise townhomes relate to the scale of the neighborhood while the towers rise to the scale of the River. The ground floors of the towers provides recreation space for the community which spills out into the courtyard and the lower roof between the towers.
