ARCH 602 - Brian Phillips - Philadelphia, PA
Perched on the edge of an urban shopping mall, this modular and affordable housing community rethinks the street edge at ground level as well as above. The project removes the existing blank facade replaces it with a lively arrangement of housing units, all tied back to the mall through a circulation corridor at the back of each row of units. This circulation corridor brings residents to the roof garden as well as provides access from the street level. Retail stores are able to purchase boxes which protrude through the housing units, giving them a presence on the street-scape. These boxes dominate the facade at street level, providing new entrances into the mall while also providing bus shelters and advertisement space for retailers. Finally public platforms are interspersed within the system to provide community spaces for inhabitants and mall-users. |
